Taylor Swift called out the White House on Monday, August 26 during the VMAs. During her acceptance speech, she discussed how the Equality Act for LGBTQ rights needed to be addressed. She started a petition back in June that now has over half a million signatures.

According to the Los Angeles Times ,  Swift said “Our country’s lack of protection for its own citizens ensures that LGBTQ people must live in fear that their lives could be turned upside down by an employer or landlord who is homophobic or transphobic, the fact that, legally, some people are completely at the mercy of the hatred and bigotry of others is disgusting and unacceptable.”

Swift and many other celebrities such as Todrick Hall. Have made it very clear that they believe the issue needs to be addressed but nobody knows how soon.

According  to the Los Angeles Times, “The White House responded early that next morning. They said, “The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, the House-passed bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights.”

Many people are upset by this because they believe others still won‘t get the right treatment. Whether that is at school, work, or even out in public. People believe more should be done in the long run. Whether that will happen or not will be a decision that many people will be looking forward to while congress still works on the nine year long, struggling equality act.
