This recent general election in Italy for becoming prime minister resulted in a victory for a right-wing coalition, one that had descended from remnants of fascism. Giorgia Meloni, a member of the Brothers of Italy, will possibly be leading the most far-right government since the era of Benito Mussolini, and is expected to become the very first woman to become prime minister of Italy.

It’s a victory I want to dedicate to everyone who is no longer with us and wanted this night. Starting tomorrow, we have to show our value… Italians chose us, and we will not betray it, as we never have,” She said according to CNN.

Giorgia Meloni, 45, the current leader of the Brothers of Italy, a right-wing political party, partitioned in a similar election in 2018 but lost to Mario Draghi, the current prime minister of Italy. But this didn’t stop her drastic increase in popularity. In recent years, she made an underscore between Italy’s rejections of politics, more specifically, mainstream politics. She is very conservative, has made it open that she’s anti-LBGTQ, and planned to have same-sex unions under review.

Meloni began to crowd herself into the political scene in 2006 and also co-founded the Brothers of Italy. While awaiting for prime minister, she is currently the President of the political party as of now.

The 2022 Italy general election resulted in Giorgia Meloni winning the most votes. As of October 7, 2022, it’s unknown what date she will officially be the first woman to become prime minister of Italy, but she will be the next far-right candidate since Benito Mussolini, a former prime minister of Fascist Italy who also led a far-right political party, and was viewed many times as a “dictator” because of him forming and spreading fascism and fascist movements, which is a far-right political ideology that had been more recognizable from dictators like Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Franciso Frano, and others.

Although Meloni is not officially prime minister of Italy yet, it leaves people unsure of what could happen to the future of Italy. The country was last ran by a right-wing political party since the last days of World War 2 when Mussolini, former prime minister of Italy had run a right-right party throughout the country, which resulted in his execution on April 28, 1945, two days before the suicide of Adolf Hitler.
