The bananas at the grocery store aren’t as old as you think. Many of the iconic food dishes we know of today have been created within the last 50-100 years, many of them being an experiment.
The baby carrot was invented by a farmer in California named, Mike Yurosek. He created the carrot in 1986 he was looking for a way to reduce the waste of carrots that weren’t supermarket quality. Using a potato peeler, he peeled the carrots, put them into two inch tubes, and sold them in plastic bags. The baby carrot is now responsible for 50% of the carrot sales sold in the U.S.
This pizza was not created by a Hawaiian, nor an Italian, but yet a Canadian. In 1962 a chef called, Sam Panopoulous. According to CNN.com, “Sam Panopoulos, who had a fairly eclectic restaurant in Ontario, thought of making a pizza that was a little bit different. So he whacked some pineapple on top of the pizza.” The reason it is called a Hawaiian Pizza is due to the brand of canned pineapple the chef used.
The chocolate chip cookie was created in 1938 by a baker named Ruth Wakefield, she had a restaurant called the Toll House Inn. She originally named the chocolate chip cookie the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie. She ended up selling the rights to make the cookie to Nestlé for $1. According to CNN.com, the cookie is quoted as being accidental, however more accurate accounts claim her recipe was deliberate.
