Carroll High School is Trying the New Smart Passes.
Carroll High School is Testing out an Electronic Hall Pass That will Track how Long Kids are in the Halls and Restrooms.
April 21, 2023
Carroll High School is implementing a new form of hall pass that is entirely digital. These new smart passes are very controversial; some think that these passes help keep kids from messing around in the hallway and others think that the passes are stressing kids out even more and keeping them from using the restroom during school.
Some are saying that students are adapting to the new passes, like Daniel Biniecki from the Mentor, “Although students found the system confusing and “weird” at the beginning of the year, it’s becoming more accepted.” (September 26, 2022). She makes it seem as though students are fine with the new smart passes being around. She also says this, “Due to the increased amount of school violence across the country there’s a regulation that schools need to know where their students are on campus at all times to keep them safe.” (The Mentor). The system will be used to track where kids are through the day, which could also lead to some people disagreeing with the new Smart Passes.
Some students have found that the new system is very stressful. Riley Phillips writes on March 16, 2023, “Olivia Bartlett graduated from Carroll a few years ago, but she has siblings who currently attend. She said she became concerned after learning about the new electronic system.” (wdtn). According to Riley Phillips, Olivia Bartlett has said “It’s pretty stressful. My sister said she just didn’t go to the bathroom, she held it all day because she didn’t want to fight with the system.” (wdtn) These students would rather not leave class and be uncomfortable then deal with the system that is supposed to help them.
