On Thursday September 7th, a baby pig was rescued from US 35, a highway in Ohio, by an Ohio Highway Patrol Officer. The pig was later named Pearl Pancetta after this incident by the highway patrol officer. (WHIO, Sept. 11) It is to be believed that Pearl was going to be taken to a slaughter house before she fell off the transport vehicle. According to Katherine Donlevy, a writer for the NY Post, “…piglet got a second lease on life after she fell off a transport truck that was likely taking her to be slaughtered.” (Sept.10)
The pig was picked up by the officer, then placed in the back of her patrol car and safely taken to the Ross County Humane Society to heal her wounds and scrapes from the road. Again, Donlevy from the NY Post says, “In spite of her dangerous fall — or daring leap — from a moving car, the piglet suffered minor road rash, but no other injuries.” (Sept. 10)
It is to be believed that Pearl will have a safe home after recovery. Pilar Arias, a writer for Fox News says “ [Ross County Humane Society] shared on social media that she had not been not seriously hurt, and will soon be at her new home to live out her days.” (Sept. 10)
According to the staff at WHIO, they say, “Pearl is currently staying with an employee of the humane society, but she will soon be joining some “pot-bellied friends” where she will live out her life.” (Sept. 11)
There have been no recent updates on Pearl’s recovery and/or if she has been moved with other piglets, but it is a positive note to know that she was saved from being slaughtered.
