On Tuesday September 12th, in Anchorage, Alaska, 2 Alaskan black bears climbed into a Krispy Kreme delivery truck and ate many doughnuts. According to Jeff Stitt, a Digital Curator for WLWT5, “The delivery driver had been making a regular delivery to a store on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in Anchorage when he came out to find the bears inside the van.” (Sept. 19) Summarizing the video from NBC NY, It had been said by the delivery driver that they left the delivery truck doors open which allowed the bears to climb in the back and start chowing down. (Sept 15) From the same video from NBC NY, the bears ate 20 boxes of doughnut holes, and 6 boxes of 3 doughnuts each. (Sept 15)
The manager of the store which the delivery was to called the base’s sheriff, Capt. Lexi Smith, and she sounded her sirens to scare the bears away. (NBC Sept 15) From the staff at Alaska Public Media says that Capt. Lexi Smith says, “We urge the public to use caution to ensure you are protecting our wildlife and yourselves. Wildlife may be our neighbor, but they should not be attracted to our human food sources.” (Sept 18)
The team at Krispy Kreme says they have learned a valuable lesson, after speaking with WLWT5 they say, “We’ll definitely be learning to slide up our ramp (and) close the doors to ensure that bears don’t get back in there again” Now that Krispy Kreme knows what not to do, hopefully any and all future doughnuts will be safe from those very cute, and very vicious bears.
