On September 21, a notice released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), on some Accords and HR-Vs the seatbelt is missing the pretensioner rivets. According to CNNs Eva Rothenburg, Honda said in the notice that the pretensioner is the seat belt component that tightens it in place during an accident, preventing the seat occupant from flying forward. Defective pretensioners increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision.
According to the same CNN article, the NHTSA wearing a seat belt in a passenger car decreases the likelihood of death by 45% and reduces the risk of moderate and critical injury by 50%.
According to Eve Chen in a USA Today article, nearly 304,000 Accords and HR-V models are being recalled.
Which Hondas are being recalled?
According to Chen in the same article, “The recall impacts 2023 and 2024 model-year Honda Accords and HR-Vs that were manufactured between Oct. 4, 2022, to Oct. 14, 2023. Honda expects less than 1% of the recalled vehicles will require repairs.”
How do I check if your Honda is affected?
According to the same article from Chen, “Drivers can enter their Vehicle Identification Number on Honda’s recall webpage or call (888) 234-2138 to check if their vehicle is affected. Honda is also planning to notify individual owners by mail around Jan. 8. Regardless of make or model, drivers can always enter their VIN on NHTSA’s website to check for recalls.”
