On January 3, 2024, Las Vegas Judge Mary Kay Holthus denied the probation of 30 year-old Deobra Redden. In what later became a viral video, Redden is shown getting up and tackling the judge. Judge Mary Kay Holthus was left slightly injured. Holthus returned to the courtroom on Monday January 9th, sentencing Redden to 19 months to 4 years in prison for the separate incident.
The incident began to unfold on Wednesday when Redden and his attorney asked the judge to lower the sentencing to Probation, saying that he was getting his life back on track. Judge Holthus replied by reading off Redden’s criminal history, which included: three felonies, misdemeanors, multiple DVs (domestic violence), robberies, and attempted home invasion. Holthus then told Redden, “You’ve got a lot going on, sir.”
Redden’s attorney then told Holthus he believed that his client could successfully complete probation. “I appreciate that,” Holthus replied, “but I think it’s time that he got a taste of something else because – I just can’t, with that history.” Redden then yelled many curse words and ran up to the judge’s stand, tackling her. He was carried away, screaming, by three other men in the courtroom.
Judge Holthus appeared in front of the court and Redden again on Monday, January 8th, sentencing Redden to 19 months to 4 years in prison for attempted murder. Chief Judge Jerry Wiese Told CNN Reporters on January 8th 2024 that when Holthus returned, she remained “sore and stiff.”
