On Monday, January 22nd, the sprinklers in the main office of Northmont High School went off after a sprinkler malfunction early in the morning. Firefighters appeared at the scene and began the clean up efforts. Classes were canceled that day as the water prevented students from entering the building through the student drop off zone. There were several rooms in the main office affected by the flooding including the counseling center’s offices, conference rooms, and the main desk.
Classes resumed the next day with students having to go through door 11 instead of the student drop off zone. The main office is currently being dried and will be closed for the remainder of the week. The cold weather is currently not affecting the process, though the cold has the potential to do more damage. The current status of the cleaning is unknown. The district released an apology on their social media pages for any inconvenience caused on the same day.
According to Dayton Daily News, Jenny Wood, a spokesperson for Northmont said “The district is working as quickly as they can to deal with the problem and to clean up so students can be back in class. (January 22)” The cause of the malfunction is currently unknown but the district is investigating it. Northmont High School was the only school in the district to be affected by the malfunction. While the fix is temporary until the cleanup is complete, traffic in the high school is high due to the lack of space and all the students trying to get into the school at once.
