On January 28th, 2024, three U.S soldiers were killed and forty were injured by a drone attack on a military base in Jordan near the Syrian border. The three soldiers killed in the attack were assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, 926th Engineer Brigade, Fort Moore, Georgia.
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, in a Pentagon briefing on the 29th of January said that, “Eight personnel who received injuries required medical evacuation from Jordan to the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center,”. She then continued to say, “Three of those patients are scheduled for imminent transport to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for follow-on care. The other five have been assessed for mild TBIs and are expected to return to duty.” (C. Todd Lopez, U.S Department of Defense, 29th January, 2024). Singh said that it is still unclear as to who is responsible for the attack. However, Singh also said that, “the attack “has the footprints” of the Iran-aligned Kataib Hezbollah group — but that the agency’s assessment remained ongoing” (Joseph Stepansky, AlJazeera, 30th January, 2024).
There was some confusion as to who/what the drone was. According to Natasha Bertrand, Oren Liebermann and Haley Britzky on a CNN article, “The drone that killed three US Army soldiers and wounded dozens more in Jordan on Sunday approached the US military outpost, Tower 22, around the same time an American drone was returning to the base, which led to uncertainty over whether it was hostile and caused a delay to the US response” (29th January, 2024).
