Barry Deam, the owner of the Englewood Fun Center located on 569 S Main St, Englewood, OH 45322, decided he wanted to build a go-kart track on the property. His proposal was that the go-kart track would be open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 11am-10pm. According to Aimee Hancock, a writer for the Dayton Daily News she says, “ potential issues with the go-kart track, [would be] noise that could negatively affect the nearby residential district.” (March 11th)
The city of Englewood likes their peace and quiet. Go-karts and racing tracks cause a lot of noise. According to Mervyn rundle who wrote a 14 page piece about racing noise, “20 karts make 75 DB of noise” (November 2010) And looking back at Hancock’s article, “City statutes limit noise within residential districts to 60 decibels during daytime hours and 55 during the night.” (March 11th)
Deam said in his defense, “the distance from the houses to the track area — 81 feet away from the closest home — would be significant enough to provide further buffering.” (Dayton Daily News, March 11th) Many of the people who live in the neighborhood disagree with Deam. I was able to have an interview with one of the people who operates in the area near the Englewood Fun Center. After speaking with a citizen of Englewood, Ranger Puterbaugh said, “Personally, I would love it if there was a go-kart track in my backyard.” (March 15, 2024) Yet, the negative feelings of the people of Englewood have struck the go-karts down.
