On September 8th, Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill was detained outside of the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami-Dade County just before their opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
According to an article from Johnny Diaz from The New York Times, “Hill, 30, was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium, briefly detained by the police, and then released, the Dolphins said. He later suited up for Sunday afternoon’s game between the Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars and scored a touchdown” (Sept. 8, 2024).
The Miami Dolphins released a statement about the issue the following day. They said how they have a strong and positive relationship with the Dade County Police Department, however they are outraged with the action of the officers involved.
According to Phil Helsel and David K. Li in an ABC article, in the statement they said, “However, as is on full display in the videos released tonight, there are some officers who mistake their responsibility and commitment to serve with misguided power,” they then say, “While we commend MDPD for taking the right and necessary action to quickly release footage, we also urge them to take equally swift and strong action against the officers who engaged in such despicable behavior”(Sept. 9, 2024).
In the same article from the same statement released by the Miami Dolphins, “It is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players, yet it is also a reminder that not every situation like this ends in peace, as we are grateful this one did,” the team said. “‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ is a question that will carry with resounding impact” (Sept. 9,2024).
