On Friday, September 6th, a 16-year-old student allegedly shot and killed a 15-year old boy during an altercation in the boys bathroom at Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland.
15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant was removed from the bathroom by students near the incident and was then treated by school nurses and the principal until authorities arrived. According to Emily Shapiro in an ABC News article, “The teen was airlifted to a trauma center, the sheriff said”(Shapiro, Sept. 20). The article proceeds to state that Warren Grant was announced dead soon after at the hospital.

In the incident authorities responded to hearing only one shot was fired inside the boys bathroom. The gun that was used has not yet been recovered.
The reasoning behind the altercation has still not been announced yet to either the sheriff department or the public.
The 16-year-old shooting suspect identified as Jaylen Prince was known by law enforcement due to other incidents, according to the ABC News article it states, “The suspect is known to law enforcement and police have previously responded to calls for service involving the teen, authorities said”(Shapiro, Sept. 20).
According to the ABC News article, We’ve had more than 10 incidents since 2022 where this suspect was either the victim, witness or suspect”(Shapiro, Sept. 20). The article states more on how the suspect has been in multiple incidents.
Jaylen Prince has now been charged for the murder of Warren Grant. In a campus safety magazine Robin Hatterslay states, the suspect is being charged as an adult with first and second-degree murder; first and second degree assault; use of a firearm in the commission of a felony/crime of violence; and possession of a firearm as a minor”(Hatterslay, Sept. 20).

After the incident occurred Harford County Public Schools Superintendent Sean Bulson made a statement, “We’re just devastated to be part of this awful group of schools who have experienced things like this, and we’re going to do everything we can, working with his community, to make sure this absolutely never happens again”(Shapiro, Sept. 20).
