An 8 year old girl drove her mom’s car to Target early recent Sunday morning.
This was quite the trek for the small shopper with an article by the New York Post reporting that the Target was “about 10 miles and 25 minutes away from the girl’s home” (Fitz-Gibbon, Sep. 16). As well as an article on WDTN stating that they were “busy roads” (Langenfeld, Gallek, Gallek, Sep. 16).
The girl’s worried family called the police about their missing child and white Nissan Rouge at around 9:00 on Sunday morning. According to the New York Times, “The police report noted that the child had last been seen by her family around 7 a.m.” (Cherelus, Sep 17) Luckily, neighbors provided the police with security camera footage that showed the girl climbing into her mom’s car alone.
That wasn’t the only call police received though, because multiple witnesses called about what looked like a small child driving. One witness, Justin Kimery, was quoted by The New York Times saying that, “It looked like she was distracted inside the vehicle” and he “could barely see the driver” (Cherelus, Sep 17) Mr. Kimery even caught a video of the vehicle swerving on his dash camera.
Police soon received a final call from a different county’s police department saying that they found a car that matched the description in a Target parking lot. They quickly began searching for the girl inside the store. Once she was located, her family was called to take her home. Cleveland 19 reported that, “The young girl also told officers that she hit a mailbox” (Harden, Sep 15)
The police department posted about the odd event soon after. According to USA Today, “‘Not sure what she bought, or if she was even able to use her Target app to save 5%’ police wrote in the post ‘We did let her finish her Frappuccino. We’re not mean.’”(Cherelus, Sep 17)
