On Monday, October 21st, an 11-year-old girl escapes home after a shooting that killed 5 family members in their Washington State home.
For the past week, authorities have been investigating the fatal shootings of the family members in the Washington home. According to Alisha Ebrahimji in a CNN News article, “Now, the girls account, detailed in court documents, is giving a first glimpse into what unfolded” (Ebrahimji, Oct. 28).
The 11-year-old in her statement said she recalled waking up to the sound of gunshots. She further explains when she opened the door she saw her father, Mark Humiston with blood on his head, and her 9-year-old brother with blood in his mouth laying on the floor in the hallway.

After hearing the shots, her 7-year old sister walked out of their shared room to investigate, but was fatally shot.
The shooter proceeds to open the bedroom door and fire the weapon twice, shooting the 13-year-old sister in the neck and hand.
The CNN article then says “Despite the pain she left from the bullets impact, the 11-year-old told authorities she recognized the weapon. It was her father’s silver Glock handgun, court documents say”(Ebrahimji, Oct. 28).
She caught a glimpse of the shooter and recognized him as her 15-year-old brother.
The 11-year-old sister then saw her brother go around the hall standing over the bodies of the family members to see if they were still alive, the girl then pretends to stay alive when her brother stood next to her bed.
According to the article authorities explained, “Their mother, Sarah Huminston, and their 13-year-old brother had been shot and killed elsewhere in the house”(Ebrahimji, Oct.28).
The girl then explained to investigators that she escaped thought a fire window in her room after her brother left, while escaping she heard her brother on the phone. Once she was out the house she went to the neighbors who called 911.
The neighbors 911 call wasn’t the first one made.
Just seven minutes before the neighbors call, the 15-year-old called for help. The article explains, “sounding out of breath and stating he was hiding in a bathroom”(Ebrahimji, Oct. 28). The court documents proceed to state that the 15-year-old told the operator his 13-year old brother had killed their family and committed suicide. The 15-year-old also stated that his brother was caught looking at pornography the night before, could would have been in a lot of trouble. This was used as a possible motive for the shooting.
Once authorities arrived at the home, they detained the 15-year-old. According to the CNN, “on Thursday, he was charged in juvenile court with five counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted murder with a firearm enhancement”(Ebrahimji, Oct. 28).

After the event that occurred, CNN reached out to Hargis Engineers, where Mark was employed and their statement said, “We are blindsided and saddened by the tragic events that have led to the loss of a respected colleague, mentor, and friends, as well as the loss of immediate family members, Mark’s leadership and vision were integral within our firm, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his surviving family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time”(Ebrahimji, Oct.28).
