On October 29, Spain began to undergo severe flash flooding which has claimed the lives of over 200 people in just 7 days of flooding. Without any warning, people were trapped in their homes, cars, and shelters. After 7 days, the authorities have recovered 217 bodies, with 213 of them originating in the Valencia region.
According to an article written by Alex Juarez with CBS News, “Puente said the rains had forced air traffic controllers to change the course of 15 flights operating at Barcelona’s airport, located on the southern flank of the city, and the national airport operator later said a total of 50 flights at the hub were canceled on Monday. “ (Juarez, November 4th)
The search for missing people continues, especially in areas such as: Valencia, Tarragona, and Barcelona, where a lot of the destruction takes place. The floods caused towns to completely shut down, evacuation efforts resulting in families being separated, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages. Entire houses have disappeared without a trace. According to an article written by Teresa Medrano and Joseph Wilson, “Electricity was at last restored for Chiva’s 20,000 residents on Thursday night, and there is still no running water. Local governments have been distributing water, food and basic necessities in towns across Valencia affected by the flash floods, and the Red Cross is using its vast network of aid to help those affected” (Medrano and Wilson, November 3rd).
