On Thursday, November 7th, in Akron, Ohio at 4:15PM officers responded to a shooting at the East Market Place and South Arlington Street. On arrival, police found a 78-year-old man with a gunshot wound who was sent to Summa Health Akron City hospital and was treated with non-life-threatening injuries.
Both vehicles were heading eastbound on East Market Place and South Arlington Street. Captain Miller said one car was in the bike lane and tried to go over causing it to side swipe the other.
Jon Jenkins Claimed in an article written by Remi Murrey with News 5 Cleveland “A guy hit my car. He was in the bike lane, and I wouldn’t let him over into my lane. He hit my car and when I yelled at him, he pulled a gun on me, and I shot back at him”(Nov, 8, Murrey). At first Captain Michel Miller said that he listed both the 78-year-old and the 39-year-old as suspects and victims until officers compared Jenkins claim with witness testimony, physical, and digital evidence.
Jenkins was charged with felonious assault. He later amended his statement and said in the same article, “We were at a stop, and I cussed him out and told him to pull over and he pulled a gun out on me,” Miller said “They just did not believe, the detectives as a collective, that the explanation or the self-defense component of that was really had any merit,”(Nov 8, Murrey).
Jenkins fired 7 shots with one hitting the 78-year-old; 911 callers assisted the man until authorities arrived. After the shooting, the man fled to the 700 block of Ravenswood Avenue where police arrested him and took him in for questioning.
As for the 78-year-old man, Captain Miller said later in the article that he is expected to survive.
