On November 15th, 2024, Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson in a boxing match in Arlington, Texas which was held at the AT&T stadium.
This match was broadcast on Netflix, which was the first time Netflix streamed a live event. Amid the excitement, many technical difficulties interfered with the viewer’s experience. In addition, ESPN states that “The fight… might have been more spectacle than substance…” (Andreas Hale, ESPN, November 16, 2024). On March 7th, 2024 it was officially announced that the two men would compete in a boxing match.
Initially, it was stated that their match would be on July 20, however, ESPN also reported that the fight was postponed once Tyson had an ulcer flare-up on an airline flight.
Interestingly, many people were concerned about the 31-year age gap between Tyson and Paul, however, the match continued. There were eight two-minute rounds. Despite some audience members voicing their opinions about the lack of action during the fight, Jake Paul secured a unanimous victory, bringing his record to 11-1. According to ESPN, Paul expressed his gratitude towards Mike Tyson, praising him as the “GOAT” and the greatest of all time in the sport.
On the other hand, Marca writes Paul critiquing Tyson for not putting up much of a fight. This conversation was held on his podcast titled, IMPAULSIVE with his brother, Logan Paul. Jake Paul states, “He was just surviving, and that’s the only thing I didn’t like” (SAM, December 1, 2024). Meanwhile, many people believe the match was scripted, specifically former world champion Carl Froch. Secondsout reports a claim from Froch stating, “100% the fight was scripted because Mike Tyson came out in round one and threw a couple of shots and had a go.” (Toby Morgan, December 3, 2024).
Although on December 2nd, 2024, Jake Paul releases his retirement statement from influencer boxing, the public continues to have mixed feelings about Jake Paul and the whole ordeal with Mike Tyson.
