On December 4, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was fatally shot while in New York City for an investor conference.
The police arrested who they believe to be the shooter, a 26-year-old man named Luigi Mangione, on Monday, December 9. Since then, they have released a timeline of what most likely happened before, during, and after the murder.
According to an article on AP News, 10 days before the shooting, the suspect arrived in New York City by bus (Sisak and Attanasio, Dec 9). He then, “takes a taxi to the HI New York City Hostel at 891 Amsterdam Ave., where he stays until the morning of the shooting” (Sisak and Attanasio, Dec 9).
The article on AP News says that Luigi left the hostel he was staying in around 5:30 am the day of the murder. From there, he headed to the hotel where the annual UnitedHealth Group investor conference was being held (Sisak and Attanasio, Dec 9). Police know this because he was seen on video cameras “walking back and forth” near the hotel at 5:41 am (Sisak and Attanasio, Dec 9). Then, according to ABC News, “Sometime before the shooting, the suspect is spotted at a Starbucks. The exact time is not clear” (Looft and Shapiro, Dec 9). He eventually returns to the hotel, though, because at 6:44 am he is seen on video shooting Brian Thompson. The ABC News article quoted NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny saying, “The shooter then walks toward the victim and continues to shoot…It appears that the gun malfunctions, as he clears the jam and begins to fire again” (Looft and Shapiro, Dec 9).
After the murder, the article on AP News states, at 6:48 am “The man enters Central Park by bicycle at the 60th Street and Center Drive entrance. It’s in the park and away from security cameras that police believe he discards a gray backpack” (Sisak and Attanasio, Dec 9). Inside of the bag, ABC 7 NY says police found “A jacket and Monopoly money” (Eyewitness News, Dec 8).
After dropping the backpack off, the suspect passed another camera still on bike but at 7 am he was caught on video, no longer with a bicycle (Sisak and Attanasio, Dec 9). At 7:04 he got into a taxi, which is suspected to have driven him near the bus terminal at George Washington Bridge. The police believe he may have left the city from there (Sisak and Attanasio, Dec 9).
