The well known children’s TV show Pingu is getting a reboot. It was first announced on October 22, 2024.
Mattel is working with Aardman Animations to reboot the children’s TV show Pingu. The original series was released in 1990 and ran until 2006. The characters speak their own language called “Penguinese.” The show was originally owned by HIT Entertainment, but in 2011, Mattel took over the rights to the show. There was a brief Japanese reboot of the show that ran from 2017 to 2019, but it obviously didn’t last. According to Sadhana Bharanidharan’s article for Kidscreen, “And its TV unit teamed up with NHK and Polygon Pictures to produce its previous reboot called Pingu in the City that ran on Japan’s NHK ETV from 2017 to 2019” (Bharanidharan, October 22, 2024).
The main reason why Pingu is getting another reboot, is his increasing popularity as an internet star. He has had multiple viral internet posts in the past few years. The article also says, “This revival is looking to capitalize on growing social media interest in the Pingu brand that has been bubbling up over the past few years, ranging from viral tweets, to a TikTok filter, to Pingu meme pages on instagram” (Bharanidharan, October 22, 2024).
The newest reboot series is currently in the works, and it will be based around these viral internet posts. It will be in the classic stop-motion style, with a modern touch. Mattel says that this reboot will be special, and that Pingu will continue to receive lots of attention. According to Louis Chilton’s article for The Independent, “‘It’s going to be really, really special. Pingu just continues to, organically, have a tremendous amount of affection and attention. And a tremendous amount of relevance’” (Chilton, October 22, 2024).
So, Pingu’s reboot is officially in the works. It was a popular show in the past, and it gained even more popularity in recent years. It can be assumed that this reboot will be highly anticipated by fans, so we will see how much people like it when it comes out.
