Awards season has officially kicked off with the recent Golden Globes ceremony that took place on January 5th. The big winners on the night included “Emilia Perez” and “The Brutalist” in the film categories, and “Shogun” and “Hacks” in the television categories.
In the acting categories, Adrien Brody and Sebastian Stan won Best Actor, with Brody winning in the Drama category for ‘The Brutalist’ and Stan winning in the Musical/Comedy category for “A Different Man”. For the actresses, Demi Moore won in Musical/Comedy for her role in “The Substance”, and Fernanda Torres won in Drama for “I’m Still Here”. Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldana won in the supporting actor/actress categories, for “A Real Pain” and “Emilia Perez” respectively.
The biggest surprise on the night, to many, was the shock of what people assumed to be the front runner for many upcoming awards shows, “Anora”, going home empty handed. In a Variety article, authors Vary and Aurthur say, “Going into tonight’s Globes, “Anora” was the only film among the top nominees to have won a major film award, namely the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. With nominees for picture (musical/comedy), director, actress, supporting actor and screenplay, most had expected the fizzy, deeply felt dramedy would at least win something. Instead, “Anora” was the highest profile nominee to go home empty-handed” (Vary, Aurthur, Jan. 5).
Another shock to some was “Flow”, a movie about a cat traversing a flooded world that has no words spoken throughout and was made by a small Latvian animation studio, winning Best Picture- Animated over movies like “The Wild Robot”, which had many other nominations on the night including ones for Original Song and Original Score, and “Inside Out 2”, which is the highest grossing animated movie of all time. The director of “Flow”, Gints Zilbaldis, said in his acceptance speech, “This film was made by a very small, young, but very passionate team, in a place where there isn’t a very big film industry, so this is the first time a film from Latvia has been here. This is very huge to us” (Zilbaldis, Jan 5).
Meanwhile, in the television categories, “Shogun” took home four awards, including Best TV Series- Drama, best Supporting Actor and Lead Actor and Actress. “Hacks” won Best TV Series- Musical/Comedy, and “Baby Reindeer” won Best Limited Series.
