The Grammy Awards took place on February 2nd, and the biggest winner on the night was Kendrick Lamar, who took home five Grammys. All five of those were for his song “Not Like Us”, which won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. In his acceptance speech for Record of the Year, Lamar dedicated the award to the city of Los Angeles, saying, “We gonna dedicate this one to the city; Compton, Watts, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood, out to the Valley, Pacoima, IE, San Bernadino, all that. This is my neck of the woods that’s held me down since I was a young pup” (Lamar, Feb 2). Lamar is able to continue his Grammys sweep into next year as well, with his newest album, GNX, being eligible for the awards next year.
There were many other winners as well. Chappell Roan took home the award for Best New Artist after all of the nominees for the award performed a medley of their songs. Doechii took home Best Rap Album for her album Alligator Bites Never Heal, and Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their hit song “Die With a Smile”. In her acceptance speech for the award, Beyoncé said, “I just feel very full and very honored. It’s been many, many years.
