As of March 11th, 2025, President Donald Trump has halted his original plan of doubling US tariffs on Canadian steel and metal imports to 50%, allegedly hours after announcing them.
As a result of the tariffs being postponed, Peter Navarro, the White House trade adviser, spoke within a AP News article that the U.S. president was pulled back on his doubling of steel and aluminum tariffs, even as the federal government still plans to place a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports starting Wednesday. ( Boak, Mar, 11, 25 ).
This decision was ultimately put in place after President Trump came after the Canadian Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, for suspending new charges on electricity by 25 %, being sent to northern states within the U.S. a couple of hours after Trump threatened to increase his tariffs on the country.
According to the AP News article mentioned previous, Doug Ford, said Tuesday afternoon that Howard Lutnick, U.S. Commerce Secretary, called him and eventually caused Ford to come to an agreement about removing the surcharge.

He apparently also talked about how he was confident that the U.S. president would also stand down on his own plans for 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. ( Gillies , Mar, 11, 25 ).
“ With any negotiation that we have, there’s a point that both parties are heated and the temperature needs to come down, ” Premier of
Ontario stated in a BBC News article about the situation, thanking Howard Lutnick for contacting him about a meeting. ( Espiner , Mar, 12, 25 ).
“ They understand how serious we are, ” he added. ” We have both agreed, let cooler heads prevail. We need to sit down and move this forward. “
