Robert E. Crimo III, the gunman responsible for killing seven people in a shooting in Chicago on the 4th of July, 2022, will be sentenced today, April 24th, 2025.
Robert is expected to get life in prison for his actions. According to the Associated Press on a CNN article, “He pleaded guilty to 21 counts of first-degree murder — three counts for each person killed — and 48 counts of attempted murder. Each first-degree murder count carries a maximum life sentence in Illinois” (April 24th, 2025).
Robert changed his plea to guilty last minute before his trial last month. According to the same article by the Associated Press, “Keely Roberts, whose 8-year-old son Cooper Roberts was the youngest person wounded and is paralyzed from the waist down, called Crimo ‘cowardly’ for not attending”(April 24th, 2025). Roberts case has progressed slowly, due to his chaotic behavior. This behavior continued Wednesday when he refused to attend court despite a judge’s previous warnings that the case would proceed without him.
According an ABC News article by Megan Forrester and Emily Shapiro, “Crimo’s father, Robert Crimo Jr., pleaded guilty last year to reckless conduct, admitting to signing the Firearm Owner’s Identification card for his son to apply for gun ownership” (April 23rd, 2025). According to the same article, “Crimo told police he wore women’s clothing during the shooting and used makeup to hide his facial tattoos and blend in with the crowd during the chaos, prosecutors said. Crimo was apprehended hours later and prosecutors said he confessed to the shooting”.
According to the previous CNN article, “The seven people killed were Katherine Goldstein, 64; Jacquelyn Sundheim, 63; Stephen Straus, 88; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78; Eduardo Uvaldo, 69; and married couple Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35”(April 24th, 2025).
