On Friday, April 25th, a Russian General named Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow after an improvised explosive filled with pellets was set off.

The car had been parked next to the generals home in Balashikha and exploded when he walked by it. The Kremlin, a citadel in Moscow that also contains the Russian government, blames Ukraine for the incident. According to Vicky Wong at the BBC, “As a matter of policy, Ukraine never officially admits or claims responsibility for targeted attacks such as the one which killed Gen Moskalik. But unnamed sources within Ukrainian security services have previously told the media, including the BBC, that they have been behind similar assassinations, such as the killing of Gen Igor Kirillov in December 2024. Named officials, though, never went on the record” (Wong, April 25th).
It is unclear Ukraine is involved with the explosion, as there has been no comment made so far. However, a Ukrainian spy has allegedly been detained. According to Ellie Cook, a reporter at Newsweek, “Russia’s FSB—the country’s main domestic security service succeeding the Soviet-era KGB—said on Saturday it had detained Ignat Kuzin, described by the agency as a Ukrainian spy.” (Cook, April 27th)
