Another Signal group chat that includes the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has been leaked. This time, the chat included his family, and he shared details regarding strikes that were going to occur in Yemen to them. The specific people in this chat were Hegseth’s wife and his two brothers, one of whom serves as his personal lawyer. As for why this chat was set up, Bertrand, Tapper, Britzky andCohen of CNN say, “The chat was set up during Hegseth’s tumultuous confirmation hearing process as a way for his closest allies to strategize, two of the people familiar with the matter said” (Bertrand, Tapper, Britzky, Cohen, Apr 21).
This all comes after Hegseth’s involvement in another leaked Signal group chat from March, which was revealed by the Atlantic to have had plans on attacks on Yemen mentioned in the chat. However, unlike this one, that wasn’t created by Hegseth himself, he was just apart of it. According to Jaffe, Schmitt and Haberman of the New York Times, “The chat revealed by The Atlantic in March was created by President Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, so that the most senior national security officials across the executive branch, such as the vice president, the director of national intelligence and Mr. Hegseth, could coordinate among themselves and their deputies ahead of the U.S. attacks” (Jaffe, Schmitt, Haberman, Apr 20).

There has been calls for Hegseth to be replaced due to all of the situations that he has found himself in. These are mostly coming from members of the Democratic Party, from members of Congress to other departments within the government. However, according to Raju, Stracqualursi and Ferris of CNN, “House Republicans have thwarted Democratic efforts to probe Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s controversial use of Signal, using their power to stop the minority party from forcing a vote that could embarrass the Trump administration” (Raju, Stracqualursi, Ferris, Apr 29).
