On Saturday, September 6, 2025, Eastern Michigan hosted FCS opponent Long Island University in a $350,000 “pay game”, and walked away with a shocking 28–17 loss. The victory marks Long Island’s first win over an FBS program in school history.
The Sharks dominated on both sides of the ball, outgaining the Eagles by over 150 total yards. Quarterback Luca Stanzani completed 12 of 18 passes for 143 yards while rushing for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Dual-threat QB Ethan Greenwood added 91 rushing yards and two scores on the ground, helping LIU control the pace of the game.

Eastern Michigan’s defense, already ranked among the worst in the FBS , had no answers for Long Island’s rushing attack. Head coach Chris Creighton stated on a article from 247sports, “The tackling is a glaring concern we are working on.”(Parke Sep.9) The Eagles also struggled offensively, failing to establish the run and falling behind early.
For Long Island, this is a milestone win, not just a historic moment, but one that could build momentum heading into the FCS playoff race. Head coach Ron Cooper stated in an article from the Northeasternconference website, “We played an FBS program on the road, and I feel good about our effort. We played hard, we played together, and we fought through adversity. We need to enjoy this win right now and then move forward to next week.”(North Eastern Conference Author Sep. 9th) It sends a message that the Sharks are no longer pushovers in matchups against top-tier competition.
Meanwhile, Eastern Michigan’s season outlook has taken a major hit. After a Week 1 blowout loss to Texas State (52–27), the Eagles are now 0–2 and trending in the wrong direction. With a highly competitive MAC schedule ahead — and only a 41% chance to reach the conference title game, the pressure is mounting in Ypsilanti. Head coach Chris Creighton is now firmly on the hot seat and could lose his job if the upsets continue.
