Jumping Through the Galaxy with Transformers
Summer Movie Reviews
September 17, 2014
This season’s summer blockbusters brought some of this year’s best films to the screen.
A movie everyone was talking about early this summer was 22 Jump Street. Starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, this buddy comedy successfully mocked the standard cop movie, all while pointing out the shortcomings of the party college culture. The best thing this movie does though, is laugh at itself. There are several jokes made throughout the film that are at its expense. Some might find this weak and untasteful, but a comedy acknowledging its own ridiculousness couldn’t have felt more right.
Ice Cube basically just plays himself, but I was okay with that. You can’t go to a movie with Ice Cube in it and expect a Daniel Day Lewis performance. Even with his lack of acting ability he was still hilarious playing off of that very idea. This movie, along with its predecessor, have proven that Ice Cube, if given the right script, can really add strong comedy to a film. This movie would have been very different if someone else had played his part, and I’m overly thankful that wasn’t the case.
Jonah Hill is just as funny now as he was way back when we fell in love with him in Superbad. He brings humor to the areas of the script that may not have had comedic intent. The best actors add something more to their movies, and Hill really stood out in this film. Channing Tatum has starred in action thrillers, and romance movies, but has proven through both of the jump streets he can be the funny guy too. People who see Tatum as nothing but a pretty face aren’t listening to his performance because he is so much more.
Transformers Age of Extinction hit theaters with Mark Wahlberg at the helm. When making a movie based on such a classic piece of source material, you’re bound to make a few people mad. Michael Bay, the director of the film, tends to tell stories through huge cinematics and humorous characters. This formula can be seen throughout the film during the huge fight sequences.
My favorite part of this movie was the voice acting. Featuring the voices of actors such as John Goodman and John DiMaggio, these transformers had some of the best voices in Hollywood.
Great voices aside, Transformers fell short when it came to developing the transformers themselves as characters. Transformers movies always end the same way, a huge fight where a city is crippled and Optimus is damaged, followed by a huge come back move that kills the bad guy. Then Optimus narrates some stuff, some cheesey new rock plays and credits roll.
Guardians Of The Galaxy was the best movie of the summer. Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and Zoe Saldana are a few of the elite components of the group. You don’t have to be a Marvel super fan to love this movie. In fact, you could probably hate Marvel for everything it is and still love this movie.
Guardians is just so fun, the characters are so interesting, the story is so engaging, and the formula is so different from every Marvel movie before it. This film’s gold comes from its characters. The interactions between Star Lord, Rocket, Groot, and the others are a huge part of what makes this movie special.
This movie was a gamble, but proved Marvel can take even one of its lesser known comics, and turn it into a hit feature film.
The script is full of well executed comedy. If you haven’t seen Guardians yet, literally don’t sleep until you do. The government shouldn’t be providing free health care, they should be providing free tickets to Guardians Of The Galaxy.
