An assailant attacked Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, using a hammer during a home invasion at their residence in San Francisco, California on October 28, 2022. Pelosi is still hospitalized from the injuries and federal and state charges have been filed against a suspect.

The suspect, identified as David DePape, made his way through a glass door and entered the home around 2 a.m., which awoke Pelosi, who was sleeping, as reported by NY Times. DePape allegedly told Pelosi that he wanted to talk to “Nancy” and then learned that she wasn’t there. DePape then said that he would wait for Mrs. Pelosi to return, and Pelosi said that she wasn’t going to be returning for several days.

Pelosi asked DePape why he wanted to meet with Speaker Pelosi. DePape said, “Well, she’s #2 in line for the presidency right? We’ve got to take them (politicians) all out.” Mr. Pelosi then went to the bathroom, where he called 911. At that point, the intruder attacked him, which led to Pelosi being driven to the hospital, where he remains with a fractured skull.

David DePape is currently facing state charges, including attempted murder, residential burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon. He is also facing federal charges of assault and attempted kidnapping. According to ABC News, DePape pleaded not guilty to all the charges and denied the allegations.

CNN also reports that DePape’s attorney said outside the courtroom, “There has been a lot of speculation, a lot of rumor, based on the nature of this case. So I’m not going to add to all the speculation by talking about the facts of this case right now.”

DePape is currently being held without bail and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 4, 2022.
