Idea of how Sam could look

Joshua Murphy, Co-editor

Samantha Straight lived on the island of Everlands. She had a first love but she doesn’t want to remember her. Since that day, Sam is now a Lost Girl, with nothing but anger in her eyes. She lived in a treehouse with rope swings and ladders to twelve floors all leading to the lookout. The other girls who lived with her were Luna, Lily, Jane, and Tina Bell. They were the Lost Girls.

On the other side of the island lived Nina Knot, who was known as the Captain. She once had a love like Sam, but things had changed. She lived on a yacht called the Fixer, with her boyfriend, James Hook. The Captain hadn’t returned to the forest she once lived in, where she had a friend named Samantha Straight. For some reason, her parents had made her go to a private school where all the teachers taught about how God’s will made Adam and Eve, not Ada and Eve. This had taken her away from her home and she now wanted to see what had come of it.

Sam stood with Tina Bell on the lookout. The two almost touched but Tina knew Sam’s rules on contact.

“Tina, will this ever be home?” asked Sam.

“For me it is, but for you, I can not say because home is where the heart is,” replied Tina

“My heart was ripped apart years ago by someone I once loved.” cried Sam in a strained voice. The emotion behind Sam‘s words made Tina reach for Sam’s hand. As Tina‘s hand reached Sam’s, Sam saw a figure far below with a knife.

“Someone is down there, and they are armed,” said Sam.

“ I’ll go get the other girls,” replied Tina

Sam hadn’t seen anyone in the woods in a long time, and the last people she had seen in, the woods had been the Knots. Sam grabbed the ladder and quickly slid down to where she could hear the other girls talking in quickly rushed voices.

“What do we do,” asked Lily, the youngest.

“We will see what they want,” said Sam.

Sam took the lead as she slid down the remaining ladders to the forest floor. Sam looked toward the stranger and butterflies shot through her. It was no stranger, it was her first love, Nina Knot, and some boy who stood beside her. Sam smiled like the sun after a rain.

Nina didn’t recognize the girl in front of her. James took a step towards the group of girls by the base of the treehouse.

“ Hello, we come from the other side of the island, and this used to be Captain’s home long ago,” said, James.

“ It’s our home,” called the youngest-looking girl.

“Nina, Nina,” said a mid-height short haired blond girl.

“ How do you know my name?” spat Nina with the rage of a bull seeing a Matador’s cape.

“ It’s me, Sam; Samantha Straight,” Said the blond girl.

The memories came back, hitting Nina like a truck. Sam in a loose white shirt green tux removed, and in swim pants walking into the nearby pond, Nina only in a red dress hair tied back.

“ Hey, cutie,” said Nina

“ Not now,” said Sam sadly

Nina swam towards Sam, “what’s wrong?”

“ I found the note,” said Sam.

“ No, No, don’t read it please,” said Nina as she grabbed Sam by the jaw, planting a kiss on her lips.

Sam backed away “ I already read it, but let me recite it to you. My love, your eyes the darkest green,” A tear ran down Sam’s eye, “lips the palest white. James, I love you more than a mermaid’s fork.”

“Sam it’s not what it looks like,” said Nina lip trembling.

“ It is and you lie as you kiss and tell me I’m yours,” said Sam.

“It’s not that, I wrote that a long time ago,” said Nina “ before I met you,”

Then the memory changed to the rainy night the two had shared months before that sad day. The campfire was warm, with careful kisses and secrets being told.

“ I think I’ll have to leave here soon,” said Nina

‘What why?” Asked Sam.

“ Dad and Mom want to move to the bay,” Said Nina

The memories were gone as she heard a yell. A stone hit James in the eye, his eye popped like a cherry tomato being bit into. James crumbled to the ground yelling in pain. Nina stood shocked as she glared at Lily’s slingshot.

“ How dare you,” yelled Nina.

“ Lilly, why,” asked Sam.

“ He looked at me wrong,” said Lilly.

“ That gave you no right,” spat Sam and Nina.

Nina drew her sword and ran at Lilly, Sam stepped in front of Nina and paired Nina‘s sword swing. The two burst into a fury of paires what word is this supposed to be?

“ I don’t want to hurt you,” spat Nina.

“ Me neither,” Said Sam.

“ Then let me punish Lilly,” Said Nina spinning to the side.

Sam sidestepped to block Nina, slashing at Nina and hitting her in the chest. Nina fell landing on her side. A tear ran down Sam’s cheek as she bent down and kissed Nina on the forehead Nina gasped and lay still.

Two months later

Sam stood with Tina on the lookout remembering that awful day and missing her first love.
