In the afternoon of November 19, 2022, the Dayton Police Department responded to calls of black smoke plummeting the air. On Alaska Street, a house that was under renovation was consumed by the fires, leaving only the chimney behind. The house where the fire originated is considered a total loss and two of the homes next to it sustained damage.

One had damage to the roof while the other had damage along its side. “We had a wind-driven house fire,” said Tyler McCoy, Dayton Fire Department Captain.

In June 2022, a fire took place on a rooftop at the historic Mendelson’s Building.

“We don’t want our crews slipping, getting,” said McCoy. “We are taking the extra precaution for the safety of our members.”A total of five homes were damaged and 11 people were displaced. The Red Cross is helping those displaced.” News Center 7’s Brandon Lewis says crews arrived on the scene after 10:00 a.m. and well into the afternoon trying to get things under control.“Just due to the amount of fire and so many houses were involved, we’ve been having a longer time overhauling everything making sure all the fire is put out,” McCoy said.

As of November 30, 2022, the cause of the fire remains an investigation, and what caused hundreds of residents to be on the streets just days before Thanksgiving.

In June 2022, a smaller fire took place on the rooftop of the historic Mendelson’s Building. Though the building was already damaged by vandalism, it sustained smaller damage from the fire.
