On February 18, 2023, in Miami Florida a tragedy strikes during an art show when a woman breaks a $42,000 balloon dog structure. The balloon dog statue was a part of the art show that was held and was created by American artist Jeff Koons. The sculpture was part of a collection of many other balloon dogs. According to another artist named Stephan Gamson on WFLA.com a fan of Koons, the woman, who was also an art collector, was looking at the sculpture and then tapped on it, only to knock it off of the pedestal it was sitting on shattering to pieces when hitting the floor. Everyone at the show started gathering around like it was a big accident. The Miami Herald reported that a family member of the woman contacted them after it was published saying that the woman accidentally bumped into it and did not tap the artwork. Gamson then followed up after that publication stating that the woman could’ve been pointing at the piece and then bumped into it.

At the end of the whole show, she was not charged for the $42,000 sculpture she broke. There was no “If you break it, you buy it” policy at that show. The artwork was covered by insurance by Bel-Air Fine art by the art advisor Bénédicte Caluch. Even though the unidentified woman was heartbroken as an art collector herself was deeply apologetic, the art staff simply swept up the pieces and was glad nobody was hurt.
