Saturday, March 4, 2023, multiple agencies of a train derailed near State Route 41 and Gateway Boulevard around 4:45 pm in Springfield, Ohio. There were no injuries following this situation. This is the second Norfolk Southern derailment in Ohio this year. It was cleaned up Sunday afternoon, March 5, 2023 to be investigated to figure out what lead 28 carts to detach.

According to Eduardo Medina and Claire Fahd of The New York Times, “The train of 212 cars was traveling from Bellevue, Ohio, to Birmingham, Alabama, and was operated by Norfolk Southern, the same rail company that has faced scrutiny after a devastating train derailment last month in East Palestine, Ohio.”  There were no hazardous materials but the derailment led to many concerns over the quality of air and water. After a burn of toxic chemicals, The NYT stated, “authorities believed posed the risk of an explosion.”

This derailment has sparked concerns about rail safety and Norfolk Southern’s performance after this being the second accident in less than a month. According to NYT, Mike Turner, a Republican congressman from Ohio stated, “This truly is outrageous,”. He continued, “Luckily, it seems we may have missed a bullet in this one, The railroad’s got a lot of questions they’ve got to answer and they really haven’t really done it very well yet,”
