Two tornadoes hit Tipton county, Tennessee on April 1, 2023. One person was killed and 28 were injured.

According to WREG, the tornadoes damaged 540 structures and did more than 37 million dollars in damage.

It is not known how strong the first tornado was, but the second tornado was reported as an EF-3.  At its peak, the tornado was 3.5 miles wide, making a 20 plus mile wide path through Tipton County; this was the part of the storm that caused most of the damage. Cody Moses was identified as the person who was killed by the storm.

WREG also reported that a fifty-three year old woman was injured when the twister hit her home causing an oven to fall on her. She remains unnamed and suffers from a punctured lung, broken femur, broken hip, and seven broken ribs. Other members of her family who were injured during the storm have been discharged from the hospital.

EMA Director Tommy Dunavant, when asked about the first, smaller tornado, had this to say about it crossing the Mississippi River: “When it came across the river, it was one mile wide.’’

Officials for Tipton County said to WREG, “About three-fourths of the town was undamaged, but the remaining one-fourth was destroyed.”

Because of all the damage, police are on the lookout for potential looters. Sheriff Beasley of the Covington Police Department made the statement: “I’ll give you just a word to the looters. If you come in here and you take away the things people have worked for all their lives, and they’ve been devastated by this storm, their homes are gone; If you come in here looting and come in here fraudulently trying to get goods, I’m going to have a new home for you at the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office. I can promise you that.”
