Tucker Carlson has officially parted ways with Fox News. His departure came on Monday, April 24. While Carlson is a controversial figure in the news, his exit from Fox will likely return to haunt the company.

Carlson reportedly was fired for multiple reasons, including the language used to describe a female executive. According to Kari Paul, of The Guardian, Carlson’s departure may also be due to a lawsuit involving Abby Grossberg, Carlson’s former senior booking producer, and the hostile work environment she faced. Officially though, Fox News claims it was a mutual agreement between Carlson and the company.

The aftermath of Carlson’s exit may be extremely detrimental to Fox News. Tucker Carlson is popular among conservatives, who comprise most of Fox News viewers. Adam Gabbatt, of The Guardian, cites that Carlson’s replacement, Brian Kilmeade, has lost nearly half of Carlson’s viewers. Fox News has also weakened thanks to the recent lawsuits pressed against it. It lost $787.5 million to Dominion thanks to Fox’s claims of election fraud.

Another disturbing discovery came when, on May 3, a text message sent by Carlson was revealed. CNN’s Kristen Holmes and Jon Passantino display the text from Carlson, where he explains how a video of a group of “Trump guys” attacked an “Antifa kid”. He claimed that the manner in which the man was attacked, being jumped, was dishonorable and “not how white men fight”. Carlson goes on to say that, even though the way the group attacked the man was dishonorable he started to side with them. He claimed, “I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him. I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it.” These appalling statements inspired renewed claims of Carlson’s alleged racist attitude. Fox News executives claimed this was a part of the reasoning behind Carlson’s firing.

Carlson’s firing marks a new era for Fox News without his powerful voice. Despite some of his more disturbing comments, many are still willing to follow Carlson’s word. The reaction to Carlson’s behavior raises questions about bias in news and the possible damage these subjective voices could cause. Time will only tell how Carlson, and Fox News, will move forward.
