On Friday, May 12, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released. The sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild, took 6 years to release but has received many positive reviews so far. Metacritic gave the game a 96. Tears of the Kingdom was apparently worth the wait.

The games follows the adventure of Link after the events of Breath of the Wild. Even though Calamity Ganon was destroyed, Hyrule will apparently not be at peace just yet. Characters from the previous game will be present along with new faces.  But many fans were actually concerned for the game, wondering if it could reach the level of success of Breath of the Wild.

While there were definitely concerns of the game being too similar to Breath of the Wild, there were actually significant changes. While originally only the surface was explorable, this games allows you to adventure outside of that restraint, opening on a large sky island. The landscape itself was also changed, adding things like caves. New mechanics like Ultrahand and Fuse were also added to replace old mechanics, this time with a larger focus on creativity.

While the game has opened to good reviews, time will only tell if Tears of the Kingdom will hold up over time. It currently looks likely though, as it’s only 1 point behind the 97 Metacritic gave Breath of the Wild. It appears the Tears of the Kingdom will rival the success of it’s predecessor. This could mean even more The Legend of Zelda games to come.
