  • A powerful earthquake struck Nepal on Saturday, April 25, triggering an avalanche on Mt. Everest.
  • It was the worst earthquake to hit the South Asian nation in over 80 years.
  • The quake struck before noon at a 7.8 magnitude and a magnitude of 6.6 aftershock hit about an hour later.
  • Smaller aftershocks have been reported rippling through the region for hours.
  • At least 3,617 people have been reported dead and more than 6,500 injured.
  • Dozens of people have been reported dead from the neighboring countries, China and India.
  • Authorities have warned the public that the death toll was set to rise.
  • There have been reports that over 70% of houses have been destroyed in the Gorkha district and most villages are said to be completely buried under rock and debris.
  • Rescue helicopters are on the scene, delivering food and water to survivors to help the region cope with the aftermath, and volunteers are continuing their search for victims that have fallen under the rubble of the collapsed buildings in Kathmandu.
