On October 10th, Atomo, a coffee company from Seattle Washington, debuted their new coffee creation plan: no more beans. Reading from the National Institute of Health, they say that the climate and conditions that coffee beans need to grow is becoming more and more delicate. They also say that by 2050 coffee beans will become much harder to produce. (Jan 12)
According to Jeff Kart, a contributor for Forbes.com, “Atomo Coffee uses superfoods and upcycled ingredients like date seeds, lemon and sunflower seeds to create “the world’s first beanless espresso.”” (Oct 10) The company does as much as they can to help reduce waste and protect the environment. Although, it is said that the ingredients they obtain to make their coffee are considered waste before the ingredients are turned into coffee. They save these ingredients from going into the trash, repurpose them, and then use them in their coffee. (From Atomo’s company website)
Atomo is on the way to make a cold-brew coffee. According to Dan Friedell, a writer for VOA News “[The Cold Brew] uses over 90 percent less water than regular coffee and is produced with reduced carbon pollution as well.” (Oct 11) The company’s mission is to be able to make environment-friendly coffee, so coffee production can continue even with the rough forces of climate change.
Despite not being made with real coffee beans, according to Atomo Coffee’s own website, “[The coffee] notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit, and graham cracker.” which is very interesting because they say they use lemon and sunflower seeds to create the coffee. It is surprising that the coffee does not have a lemon taste.
