May 5th there was a shooting at an Oklahoma lake party. The mass shooting left 1 dead and 22 injured. The latest in a trio of shootings involving teens or young adults over the weekend across the US. The chaos unfolded around 9 p.m. on a Sunday. This statement from Emily Ward gives us the location of the event, “Campground near Arcadia Lake about 13 miles north of Oklahoma City” (May 5, Ward). So this party was not in Oklahoma City, but by it.
The victims suffered injuries that ranged in severity, A local health system said 13 people were hospitalized Sunday. Information given from a local hospital states, “An 18-year-old woman died from her injuries that she got from the shooting,” (May 6, Edmond). Due to all of the injuries and death from the shooting hospitals have taken in over 20 people.
This attack is among more than 130 US mass shootings with 4 or more victims this year. This is according to the Gun Violence Archive. Gun Violence Archive also said, “Gunfire has killed at least 278 youth ages 12-17 so far this year, with another 769 injured,” (May 6, Edmond). Authorities are looking for the two suspects in connection with this shooting. As temperature rises, so does the likelihood of violence. The shooting happened at a party that was “promoted across multiple social media platforms,” this is drawing a large crowd of young adults from across the metro area.
Authorities believe the shooters were two men wearing ski masks when they opened fire. Investigators from Edmond Police are saying, “We are actively working the case and are not releasing suspect information at this time,” (May 7, Ward). Jeremiah Braxton, 18, told the police that there were about 250 people at the party. Only Jeremiah gave information, as the case goes on the suspects will be uncovered and the people who were affected by this shooting will receive justice.
