On October 20th, 2025, An international Cargo Plane in Hong Kong was about to land, when suddenly, it flew off the runway track and collided with a security vehicle before falling into the sea, killing 2 people. We know little about the full story, but what we know is that presumably late in the night, Flight UAE9788 was on a Cargo Plane, specifically a Boeing 747 freighter, operated by Air ACT. The plane was headed from Dubai to Hong Kong international airport, and was about to be a successful flight. But at around 3:50 in the morning local time (19:50 GMT on Sunday), disaster struck when the plane suddenly crashed.
Right before the plane landed, something happened that caused the plane to lose control and slide off of the runway. It crashed right through the fencing and destroyed a patrol car, launching it into the sea with it.
Now the plane was ruined, its body was sliced into two pieces when it veered into the sea. The 4 crew members inside of the ship ended up safe and alive without any major injuries. However the people that were on the patrol car that was flung into the sea by the crashing Cargo Plane died. The two staff members in the car were 30 and 41 years old and had 7 and 12 years of experience respectively.
Not much is known about the cause of the crash, however there are still investigations going on in this case, as Martin Yip from BBC News says “Officials are investigating the cause of the crash on the north runway.” which is very good news because this also happens to be one of, if not, the deadliest accident that has happened since the Hong Kong International Airport has opened. Steven Yiu, the director of the airport, to try to make the situation easier says “The airport authority would provide all necessary assistance and support to the family, adding the two staff who died had worked at the airport for seven and 12 years respectively.” according to James Pomfret and Farah Master on Reuters. As of now the runway has been reopened but “won’t be used regularly anymore”.
