On Friday, January 9, 2026, at Northmont High School, the Wayne Warriors defeated the Northmont Thunderbolts 49–40 in a Greater Western Ohio Conference boys basketball game.
The game started off close, with both teams playing strong defense in the first quarter. Northmont showed early energy and kept the score tight, while Wayne focused on slowing the pace and controlling possessions. When

Northmont scored early, the student section reacted loudly, and one fan shared how intense the start felt. “The energy was crazy at the beginning, everyone thought we had a real chance to take control,” said a fan from the crowd (Northmont student).
In the second quarter, scoring stayed low as both teams relied on zone defenses. Wayne began to get to the free-throw
line more often and took advantage of turnovers, which helped the Warriors build a small lead before halftime. After a key run, a Wayne supporter commented on the team’s focus. “We knew if we stayed calm and played our game, we would pull ahead,” said a fan watching from the stands (Wayne student).
Wayne increased its lead in the third quarter by rebounding well and limiting Northmont’s fast-break opportunities. Northmont struggled to hit outside shots but continued to play hard. During the quarter, a Northmont student noticed the effort despite the score. “Even though we were down, the team never gave up and kept hustling,” they said (Northmont student).
Late in the fourth quarter, Northmont applied full-court pressure and made a short run that brought excitement back into the gym. The crowd got louder as the Thunderbolts closed the gap. “When we went on that run, everyone was on their feet and yelling,” said another student from the student section (Northmont student). However, Wayne responded by making important free throws and finishing key plays to secure the win. “Those last free throws were huge. You could tell the team wanted it,” said a Wayne fan after the game (Wayne student).
Wayne’s ability to control the tempo and stay composed in the final minutes made the difference. Northmont showed strong effort and determination but couldn’t overcome Wayne’s defense.
