Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is getting a fresh start in the NFL after being released by the Miami Dolphins and quickly signing with the Atlanta Falcons. The move marks one of the biggest quarterback changes of the 2026 offseason and gives the former Pro Bowl quarterback another chance to prove himself as a starter.
Tagovailoa spent six seasons with the Dolphins after being selected fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. During his time in Miami, he had several strong seasons, including leading the league in passing yards in 2023.
However, injuries and inconsistent play during the 2025 season led to a change in direction for the franchise.
Miami ultimately decided to release the 28-year-old quarterback, taking on a massive salary-cap penalty in the process. According to reports, the Dolphins will absorb roughly $99 million in dead cap money after moving on from Tagovailoa.

Shortly after his release, the Falcons signed Tagovailoa to a one-year contract worth about $1.3 million. The move gives Atlanta additional depth at quarterback and could lead to competition for the starting role.
NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported that “the Falcons are signing Tua Tagovailoa to a one-year deal.” (CBS Sports Mar 9th 2026).
Meanwhile, analysts noted the financial impact of the Dolphins’ decision.
One report explained that Miami released the quarterback while “taking a record $99 million dead cap hit.” (Reuters Mar 9th 2026).
Tagovailoa will now compete for playing time in Atlanta and hopes the change of scenery will help revive his career. For the Falcons, the signing could provide valuable experience and stability at one of the most important positions on the field.
