On April 14th, the City of Clayton closed the southbound lane of Hoke Road between Wenger Road and Smith Drive for numerous traffic and safety upgrades, including the eventual installation of a new roundabout. The closure will last until September.
According to the City of Clayton’s online statement, the planned upgrades include:
- A new roundabout at Hoke Road and Wenger Road
- Adding sidewalks and a mutli-use path
- Installing new lighting
- Expanding water and sewer infrastructure

The roundabout’s construction is set to begin in September and may last up to 90 days.
When we asked Kevin Schweitzer, Clayton’s Financial Director, about the funding for the project, he said, “The total cost of the project is $4,205,900 with Federal grants (through ODOT) covering $3,637,661. The City pays the remaining $568,239 plus the ROW acquisition costs as those are not included in the total cost of the project.” Kevin also said that right-of-way acquisition costed the city $520,656.96, though some ROW acquisitions are still in the courts for mediation.
