The government is now in its third week of shutdown after officially shutting down October 1st,2025. With the heated standoff between the Democratic and the Republican parties, the U.S. citizens can’t help but question what this shutdown means for their families.

Under the U.S. system, for the federal government to be funded, identical appropriations bills must pass both chambers of Congress and be signed into law by the President. Snap Benefits

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has been around for decades taking the weight off individuals shoulders helping low income families purchase groceries and feed their families.

On October 26,2025 the U.S. The Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the notice about federal food aid not going out on November 1st.   On their official website they released a statement stating, “Senate Democrats have now voted 12 times to not fund the food stamp program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Bottom line, the well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued November 01. We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance.” (USDA, October 26,2025)

A federal government shutdown threatens to halt the distribution of SNAP benefits in November 2025, leaving more than 40 million Americans without food assistance. Public reactions on social media have voiced deep anxiety, with many expressing fears of not being able to feed their families. Concerns have also been raised that such widespread food insecurity could lead to an increase in crime. With the holiday season approaching, the question of how affected families will afford food has become a major worry. “Now we’ll have to prioritize which bills we can pay and which can wait,” said McBlais, who works for a Maine social services agency and who draws about $600 a month in SNAP benefits. “My children won’t go hungry” (McBlais, October 27, 2025).

Medicare

During a government shutdown, Medicare and Medicaid benefits are not immediately interrupted because they are funded separately from the annual appropriations process. However, a shutdown can cause significant delays and disruptions to certain services and administrative functions. Meaning if you are currently trying to apply or waiting for a call back from Medicare or Medicare, you might not get a response back no time soon.

A person identified as Mary left a comment on the Medicare Rights Center website saying that the healthcare funding situation would harm those on tight budgets, stating, “That will lead to unfounded deaths. But since congress does not have to worry about the ins hurting them they stick it to the little man” (Mary, October 27, 2025).

In conclusion, with everything going on in today’s world, it is crucial for American citizens to stay alert. Not only does their actions affect our lives, but it also shapes our future.  The government was formed to create order and justice, protect rights, and promote the general welfare of society. The government roles is to execute and enforce laws as created by Congress to provide order and stability. With the government shutting down from a heated stand of the government fails to do its job to give the people order and stability.
