As of November 2nd, Hurricane Melissa has climbed to more than 60, causing up to $4 billion in insured losses in Jamaica and billions of dollars in overall damage across the Caribbean.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane with winds of approximately 185 mph on October 28 — officially being one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit Jamaica, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and destroying homes.
It later demolished its path towards Cuba as a Category 3 storm before going through the Bahamas and passing near Bermuda.
Education Minister Dana Morris Dixon spoke to reporters on NBC News on Monday, confirming 28 deaths on the island in a X post shared by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
” All of Jamaica is going through this period of mourning and this period of pain, ” Dixon spoke ( Li, Nov, 3, 25 ).

The extent of the devastation caused by Melissa in Jamaica has only recently become more and more apparent, as the hurricane disrupted communication networks and cut off power across much of the island after hitting land on Tuesday.’
According to an article from BBC, the Red Cross says that 72% of people across Jamaica still do not have electricity and around 6,000 are in emergency shelters. ( Phillips, Nov, 2, 25 ).
Jamaican officials have allegedly confirmed to news agency AFP that multiple field hospitals have been established to treat people in the worst-affected areas in the west.
