On December 26th 2025, a content creator named Nick Shirley made a 42 minute long video, in which he accused Minnesota daycares —specifically a place called Quality Learning Center–- of fraud. His allegations have been influencing both government action as well as hate against the Somali community. They may also be the cause of the center closing down.

In Shirley’s video he visits multiple child care centers and states that despite receiving state funding they provide no services. News stations such as CBS had visited some of these places to conduct their own investigates and discovered that two of the centers mentioned had an active license, and all centers had been visited by state regulators in the past 6 months. To add on, the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families – or DCYF–, had visited nine of the centers. They had found that eight were caring for children while the ninth had not opened yet, (Bettin Jan 7th).
This controversy has caused both government action as well as an uproar in the Somali community.
Even before this video President Trump has been criticizing immigrant communities, with NBC quoting him saying, “much of the Minnesota Fraud, up to 90%, is caused by people that came into our Country, illegally, from Somalia.” (Helsel Jan 2 ). However with these recent allegations it has caused Trump’s department of Health and Human Services to freeze all federal funding to Minnesota. They have also stated that social services to multiple Democratic states, including Minnesota will be shut down, (Battin Jan 7th).

To add on the Trump administration has also deployed over 2,000 Homeland Security agents into the Twin Cities. According to CBS News, their goal to is crack down on fraud and immigration, (Battin Jan 7th).
According to CBS News, both the Governer Tim Walz and the DCYF have made statements in response. Walz believes that Trump is using these allegations to attack Minnesota, his exact words being, “The state is under assault like no other time in our states history, because of a petty vile administration,” (Bettin Jan 7th). The DCYF’s statement, according to NBC News, brings up concerns about the families in the community saying “Distribution of unvetted or deceptive claims and misuse of tip lines can interfere with investigations, create safety risks for families, providers, and employers, and has contributed to harmful discourse about Minnesota’s immigrant communities,” (Helsel Jan 2nd).
