On December 2nd 2025, the Trump Administration announced that immigration from 19 different countries that already happen to have immigration restrictions, would be paused. The countries that would be affected by this are Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, along with restricted access for Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Originally, in June of this year, there were just restrictions and limits for immigration in these 19 countries. But it’d appear that the restrictions wouldn’t have stopped just there.
This means that green cards and citizenship applications from people of those countries will be paused, Naturalization Ceremonies for migrants of those countries will be paused, and any finalizations for immigration cases of those countries would be paused. People that have already immigrated from the banned countries before the ban from about up to 2021 will be re-interviewed and re-reviewed.
The travel ban is most likely a response to the shooting of 2 national guards that happened at about a week prior, on November 28th 2025, where a man in Afghanistan is the main suspect, but according to an interview from NBC news, a spokesman for U.S citizenship, Matthew Tragesser, says that “Citizenship is a privilege, not a right. We will take no chances when the future of our nation is at stake,” (December 2, 2025. Zoë Richards). And according to an interview with Trump from USAToday, he says “We don’t want those people. We have enough problems. Many of them are no good, and they shouldn’t be in our country.” (December 3, 2025, Francesca Chambers).
Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, announced that the travel ban will grow to more than 30 different countries, as said in an interview with CNBC news “I won’t be specific on the number, but it’s over 30. And the president is continuing to evaluate countries,” (December 6, 2025). Along with the total number of countries added to the travel ban, the names of these countries being added to the travel ban remain unspecified. But it can be expected that more countries with poor government structures or with poor conditions would be next.
